This is my small collection of
tube and transistor radios made by Zenith Radio Corporation,
which started the transition from vacuum tubes to transistors in
1955. Regardless of the active electronic components used in the various models, I found the Zenith Transoceanic series very interesting. All was portable radios and was characterized by good sensitivity and a wide range of receivable frequencies. These receivers are a pleasure to use and listen to even though they have been many years since their construction. A Brief History of the Zenith Radio Company. The Company began operations in Chicago, Illinois in 1918 with a small production of amateur radio equipment. The name Zenith was derived from its founder's amateur radio callsign 9ZN. The Company was formally registered as Zenith Radio in 1923. Zenith immediately introduced many models of domestic and portable radios (1924) of which it was a major producer, and later achieved great success with the famous "Transoceanic" series which it began to introduce into the market since 1938. From the 1930s Zenith began investing in TV technology, which in the USA began with the first commercial TV broadcasts in 1939. The first line of black and white TV sets was marketed in the USA in 1948. Zenith patented the wireless TV remote control in 1955 , and later specialized in FM multiplex stereo (1961) and later in flat screen TVs and high definition "HDTV". From 1979 Zenith began to feel the effects of foreign competition, especially from Japanese manufacturers and went into crisis, so he decided to enter the world of computers and bought control of the American Heathkit which at that time produced the H-8 computer in kit form. Zenith changed the name of Heathkit's computer division to "Zenith Data System" and entered the global IT market by offering various models of desktop and portable computers. To make the transition from Radio to computer and CATV production definitive, the company name was changed from 1984 to "Zenith Electronics Corporation". In 1989, to raise capital to invest in research on high-definition TV and cable, the "Zenith Data System" division was sold to the French group Bull. But from 1990 the state of crisis worsened further and Zenith Electronics was forced to sell 5% of its shares to the LG Electronics group of Seoul, South Korea. Zenith subsequently entered bankruptcy and in 1999, in exchange for debt repayment, LG acquired the remaining share package of the old and glorious company. © IK3HIA, 2023 |

piccola collezione di radio a valvole e a transistor della
Zenith Radio Corporation, la quale iniziò il passaggio dai tubi
termoionici ai transistor nel 1955. Indipendentemente dai componenti elettronici attivi utilizzati nei vari modelli, ho trovato molto interessante la serie Transoceanic della Zenith, tutte radio portatili contraddistinte da buona sensibilità e un'ampia gamma di frequenze ricevibili. Questi ricevitori sono piacevoli da usare e ascoltare anche se ormai sono trascorsi molti anni dalla loro costruzione. Breve storia della Zenith Radio Company. La Società iniziò ad operare a Chicago, Illinois nel 1918 con una piccola produzione di apparecchiature per radioamatori. Il nome Zenith derivò dal nominativo da radioamatore del suo fondatore 9ZN. La Società fu registrata formalmente come Zenith Radio nel 1923. Zenith presentò subito molti modelli di radio domestiche e portatili (1924) di cui fu grande produttore, e in seguito ottenne grande successo con la famosa serie "Transoceanic" che iniziò ad introdurre nel mercato sin dal 1938. Dagli anni 30 Zenith iniziò a investire nella tecnologia TV, che negli USA iniziò con le prime trasmissioni TV commerciali nel 1939. La prima linea di apparecchi TV in bianco e nero fu commercializzata negli USA nel 1948. Zenith brevettò il telecomando TV senza fili nel 1955,e in seguito si specializzò nella FM multiplex stereo (1961) e successivamente nelle TV a schermo piatto e nell'alta definizione "HDTV". Dal 1979 Zenith cominciò a risentire della concorrenza straniera, specialmente da parte dei produttori giapponesi ed entrò in crisi, così decise di affacciarsi nel mondo dei Computer ed acquistò il controllo dell'americana Heathkit che a quel tempo produceva in kit il computer H-8. Zenith cambiò il nome della divisione computer della Heathkit in "Zenith Data System" e si inserì nel mercato mondiale dell'informatica proponendo vari modelli di computers da tavolo e portatili. Per rendere definitivo il passaggio della produzione dalla Radio ai computer e alla CATV dal 1984 il nome della società fu mutato in "Zenith Electronics Corporation". Nel 1989, per rimediare capitali da investire nella ricerca sulla TV ad alta definizione e via cavo, la divisione "Zenith Data System" fu venduta al gruppo francese Bull. Ma dal 1990 lo stato di crisi si acuì ulteriormente e la Zenith Electronics fu costretta a vendere il 5% delle proprie azioni al gruppo LG Electronics di Seul, Sud Corea. Successivamente Zenith entrò definitivamente in bancarotta e nel 1999, in cambio della riparazione dei debiti, LG acquisì il rimanente pacchetto azionario della vecchia e gloriosa azienda. © IK3HIA, 2023 |
