Zenith Transoceanic mod. Royal 1000 - Chassis 9AT41Z2 - Zenith Radio Corp. Chicago, IL - U.S.A. - 1958. The Royal 1000 was the first Zenith Transoceanic built using transistors as active elements. This multiband radio set was built in the U.S.A. and marketed from 1958 until 1963 when the next model was introduced. The 1000 is a portable receiver with 8 frequency bands and AM reception. A rotary drum range changer allows selection of the Broadcast band (540 - 1600 kHz) and seven shortwave bands (2 to 22.5 MHz). The circuit is a superheterodyne type and uses 9 germanium transistors: 121-48 OSC, 121-49 mixers, 121-180 1st IF, 121-181 2nd IF, 121-64 1st Audio, 121-46 Drivers, 2 x 121-47 Audio outputs. The frequency conversion is single and the ZF/IF resonates at 455 kHz. Transistors are mounted on sockets, a holdover from tube assemblies. The radio is equipped with multiple antennas: a whip antenna inside the upper handle, a magnetic antenna is inserted in the upper plastic cover, another detachable wavemagnet antenna for mobile use is kept inside the cabinet. It is also possible to connect an external wire antenna for short waves via a terminal board marked G and A (Ground and Antenna) located in the rear left part of the chassis. The Royal 1000's audio output is 500 mW into a 4-inch diameter 4 ohm speaker. Inside the front cover there is room for a book with the frequency and time tables of the stations, for a time zone calculation disc with the relative world time zone table beside it. On the front of the radio there are knobs for tuning, tone and on-off-volume controls and a headphone socket. By opening the rear cover, in addition to the antenna terminal block there is the connector for the detachable wavemagnet antenna instead of the fixed one, furthermore on the right side there is an RCA socket for the audio output. Power is supplied by nine 1.5V torch batteries (type D or LR20) of which 8 are placed in series to obtain 12 Vdc and one 1.5 Vdc is used to illuminate the dial scale. The cabinet is in heavy chromed metal with leather trim and the carrying handle which also includes a whip antenna. The dimensions are: (WxHxD) 12.6 x 10.5 x 4.8 inch and the weight is 12 lb 1.8 oz without batteries. Historical cold war note: As in other radio receivers with Medium Wave reception built and marketed in the U.S.A. starting from 1951 until 1963, it can be noted that also in the Royal 1000 the acronym CD (Conelrad) is impressed on the broadcast dial scale in correspondence with the two nuclear warning frequencies of 640 and 1240 kHz. La Royal 1000 è stata la prima Zenith Transoceanic realizzata utilizzando come elementi attivi i transistor. Questo apparecchio radio multibanda fu costruita negli U.S.A. e commercializzato a partire dal 1958 fino al 1963 quando fu immesso sul mercato il modello successivo. La 1000 è un ricevitore portatile con 8 bande di frequenza e ricezione in AM. Un cambio gamma a tamburo rotante permette di selezionare la banda delle Onde Medie (540 - 1600 kHz) e sette bande in onda corta (da 2 a22.5 MHz). Il circuito è del tipo supereterodina e utilizza 9 transistor al germanio: 121-48 OSC; 121-49 mixer; 121-180 1° FI; 121-181 2° FI; 121-64 1° Audio; 121-46 Driver; 2 x 121-47 uscita Audio. La conversione di frequenza è singola e risuona a 455 kHz. I transistor sono montati su zoccoli, un retaggio degli assemblaggi a valvole. La radio è dotata di molteplici antenne: un'antenna a stilo all'interno della maniglia superiore, un'antenna magnetica è inserita nella copertura di plastica superiore, un'altra antenna wavemagnet staccabile per uso mobile è custodita all'interno del mobile. Inoltre è possibile collegare un'antenna esterna filare per le onde corte tramite una morsettiera marcata G e A (Ground and Antenna) posta nella parte posteriore sx dello chassis. L'uscita audio della Royal 1000 è di 500 mW su un altoparlante da 4 Ohm del diametro di 4 pollici (10.2 cm). All'interno del coperchio anteriore c'è posto per un libro con le tabelle di frequenze e orari delle stazioni, per un disco di calcolo del fuso orario con a lato la relativa tabella mondiale dei fusi orari. Sul frontale della radio ci sono le manopole per i comandi di sintonia, di tono e di on-off-volume e una presa per cuffia. Aprendo il coperchio posteriore, oltre alla morsettiera dell'antenna c'è il connettore per collegare l'antenna wavemagnet staccabile al posto di quella fissa, inoltre sulla parte destra c'è una presa RCA per l'uscita audio. L'alimentazione è fornita da nove batterie torcia da 1.5V (tipo D o LR20) delle quali 8 sono poste in serie per ottenere 12 Vcc ed una da 1,5 Vcc serve per illuminare la scala parlante. Il mobile è in pesante in metallo cromato con finiture in pelle e la maniglia per il trasporto che include anche un'antenna a stilo. Le dimensioni sono: (LxAxP) 32 x 26,7 x 12,2 cm e il peso è di 5.5 kg senza batterie. Nota storica sulla guerra fredda: Come in altri ricevitori radio con ricezione delle Onde Medie costruiti e commercializzati negli U.S.A. a partire dal 1951 fino al 1963, si può notare che anche sulla scala parlante della gamma OM di questa Zenith è impressa la sigla CD (Conelrad) in corrispondenza delle due frequenze di allarme nucleare di 640 e 1240 kHz.
