General Electric mod. P797A  "All Transistor" - U.S.A. 1959

P797A "All Transistor" - USA 1959

The P797 was a superheterodyne receiver for the Medium Wave  band (range from 540 to 1600kHz), which used 5 germanium transistors and two diodes: 2N168A, 2N135, 2N293, 2N192, 2N321; 1N64G, 1N87A. The Medium Frequency resonated at 455 kHz and the antenna was wound around a long ferrite core.

The cabinet was made of pressed cardboard covered with beige leather, the tuning knob was located on the right side while the volume knob with the power switch was on the left. The magnetodynamic loudspeaker had an impedance of 3.2 ohms and a diameter of 4 inches. Power was supplied by four 1.5 V type D batteries (LR20 or UM1). The dimensions of the radio were: (WHD) 8.5 x 5.6125 x 2.75 inch.

The radio had been designed and marketed during the Cold War therefore, as on many other receivers made in the same era, the tuning knob indicated the two tuning positions (.CD) where you would be able to listen to the emergency stations of the fallout alarm system CONELRAD.
